Rachel visited the largest business on Exmoor – Shearwell on April 11.
Shearwell is a family business, established 35 years ago outside Wheddon Cross. It is now an international business, with offices in the USA, Australia and New Zealand. The UK business employs 118 people. The animal tags made by Shearwell are sold all over the world.
Innovative technology supports the business, which designs and patents all their machinery; including robotics.
Rachel, who is Liberal Democrat Parliamentary candidate for Tiverton and Minehead said: “My visit to Shearwell was nothing short of inspirational. It has certainly inspired me to press for proper broadband for this constituency. What good is the M5, if you can’t use a computer and set up a business here in terms of connectivity?
“I would also encourage The Exmoor National Park Authority to support businesses like this on Exmoor, rather than simply focusing on tourism. Our countryside is a living entity – we need high level, well paid technical jobs that do not harm the environment and the people to do them”.
